Basic research is what I'm doing when I don't know what I'm doing. - Wernher von Braun

Scientific American

The new Scientific American is here!  The new Scientific American is here!

Gee, I wish I was smart enough to be a real scientist.  Now here I am, a grownup trying to keep up.   I can usually get through the social science articles; the physics and chemistry - well, I do what I can.

The first item I’ll note is the column Insights.  The climatologist Michael Mann who invented the ‘hockey stick’ graph shows just how badly humans are screwing up the planet in this blog mentioned in the article.

I’ve heard the ‘Little Ice Age’ denouncement of global warming and wondered if there was anything to it.   This fellow dismisses that objection as a regional, not global, phenomenon.  He suggests that if we follow the money, we’ll see much oil $ funding the ‘scientists’ who try to debunk the evidence.  We’ve seen this before in the tobacco shenanigans.

I find it so astonishing that folks who get their flu shot and watch their plasma TV and microwave their popcorn, suddenly become skeptical of science when it suggests that our selfish lifestyle might have to be constrained.
